Cheap Wine and Cigarettes

Through shallow hooded eyes admiration flows
as morning breaks my head and heart grow stronger
the past fades away with a flighty glory never before achieved.
As my insistence strengthens with the sun,
I am me again.
Your hooks and knives no longer in my back,
my head not seized between your hands
I have evolved, learnt more, feared less.
I have woken anew and thrown off the shadows of the past
I am free...
But still...
Trepidation below the belt, a low blow to the brain.
You shock me with the way things go.
A memory missing from the grey matter,
Obscured from the teeming sphere
Shooting into darkness.
Trying not to feel the way i did,
trying to leave behind the broken peace for a better place.
I had the proof, yet it is gone
and my sense of belonging followed it into the backlit sky
and still, throughout the struggle,
the infinite battle for power and wellbeing,
I find it extraordinary to compromise my beliefs for a night of cheap wine and cigarettes...
Yet after an hour of the same,
your hooks will sink in and my fortitude will die away
until Im back where I began
Searching for a better trust
