Brothers one and all

There is nothing more pleasing
Than defeat in their eyes
And the vision of our boys
Standing nine feet bloody high.
Bruised and battered warriors
Brothers one and all
Weary, yet respondent
To the mighty maroon call.
I saw it happen there in front
Like an ancient biblical tale
A series win so strong
Yet somehow oh so frail.
With a tear in my eye
I put these words to pen
Mere words can never thank
Those mighty maroon men.
They have now joined the legends
Of Mal, Geno and the king
Who when they wore the jumper
Could do any bloody thing.
From boys to men overnight
In a glorious Sydney stopper
We bow our heads and give a thought
To our mate “the grasshopper.”
When we think of all that’s past
In the last 26 turbulent years
The fights, the guts, the glory
The happiness and tears.
We know it could never have been,
These brothers one and all
Without the brilliant concept
Of State of Origin Football!
