They were lovers
of an ordinary seal
and did not see flowers
other than things in a field..
heard music as pleasant sounds
coming out of instruments,
holding no ecstatic terrors
bringing no Godly unease
to their mild and middleway minds-
and when they held hands
no fire flashed between them..
no symphonic waves of panic swelled;
crashing as the sea in giant need,
and they looked at each other kindly
without being thunderstruck..
the blood in their veins as easy as pipesmoke
and they found life good..
until the conjuring moon
one night told them lies~
weaved fantasies of disbelief
till flowers were towers of glory!
music, mighty torrents in the air
rending the clouds with fire-
the very place underfoot,
high alters of unfathomed desire
leading into an abyss of surpassing joy!
hung like jewels upon fingertips
the blood in their veins a raging sin
invoking firey kingdoms of lust..
drowning in the depths of discovery~
former life a bloodless word, made flesh-
In the morning mild and married,
they ask politely if the other slept well:
"pass the milk"
..sipping coffee dreamily
and contemplating potted plants,
dry cleaning and luncheons
before the clock tells them
they are once more, released
into their separate days~
that night, the moon merely informs,
it is time for bed.

nice write bro..this had a different feel from most of your other writes, which is a great testimony of your diversity as a writer...
i particularly like the morphing of the state of affairs as described in the second stanza.
nicely done, bro!

Over a year ago (ironically on Valentine's Day), I closed a write with the line "and the moon is just the moon again" (tragic, it was really). The conclusion of your piece... needless to say... speaks volumes to me. And it... sets my mind turning on something I spend a good deal of time thinking about....
Sylvia Plath moved toward marriage as one would a death chamber. The thought of it terrified her (her journals are evidence of this). I understand the fear.... and the worry of "what will become of the creative, real me if I domesticate myself". Sylvia married, of course, a poet --- a forward thinking attempt to retain her voice, I think. She perhaps was more successful than I (fool I, who stopped writing essentially for a decade during my own marriage)... but still, she struggled. It is, I'd agree, difficult for a poet to settle into routine and to balance the responsibilities of marriage (and even, adulthood) with creative endeavors. I'd argue though... that it is not altogether impossible. I honestly believe (though it took me a while to come to this conclusion) that the moon itself doesn't change. It is, only, how we see it that becomes altered at times.
Your moon, Billy.... ain't never gonna be just a moon... for a poet might see it from a different perspective for a time, but eventually - he/she will look up at it and be awed all over again.
Your title is exquisite, Billy and the whole of this piece, terribly poetic. There are some perfectly wonderful lines here (I'd excerpt them all here - but I'd guess that you can probably imagine which I'm drawn to). The title, the symbolism, the perspective and even, just the use of the word "thunderstruck" says much. It's a glorious piece, my friend... it truly is.
Wishing you all the beauty of the moon and that you will always have someone who'll remind you of the same if/when a reminder is needed,
~Snemmy

Funny how so much build up of excitement, when two people first meet, if their lucky, leads into a” pass the milk” routine every morning for the rest of their lives. And they owe it all to the moon….but of course…
And to be fair I’ll spare you the “kiss ass” routine….
Nice job
Peace out:) |

Billy~
Gosh, there is just so much in here. So much. The sadness I felt in this write is, (I fear), all too often true- but that doesn’t mean it has to be. [be prepared for a bit of a ramble .. sorry in advance]
I think a majority of the time people get caught up in what they think they should have instead of what they want, settling for an otherwise non-passionate existence. [I, sadly, was one of them, and the admission of that hurts almost as much as the decision to stay ..] For some, (the uninspired and placid), it is the amatory forces that drive them to believe .. to settle.. (Thus, the lustful inspiration of the moon). But for the passionate driven, the moon is ever and always glowing .. softly and imperiously inspiring to those who live a sentient life. To feel .. to really feel every single moment, is what makes the journey so grand and sublime. Even if that means tears, sometimes. I think snemmy is right. A poet’s moon will always be an awe-inspiring vision, albeit viewed differently during the differing aspects of the phases of not only our lives, but our circumstances as well ..
When two hearts meet that are already individually inspired .. individually inflamed with a zest for life in all it’s glories ... the moon not only becomes wondrously bright, but shines anew each and every moment and complacency is vanquished. We all should have this in our lives ... we all should have someone we can look to each day in a new way and have our passion for them renewed ..
...a means to an end? I should say so! An end to lonely nights .. an end to misgivings and misguidance .. an end to wondering why ... an end to the wait for someone to see the secret parts of you, and smile, knowingly .. It is incredibly sad that some never figure this out .. The moon will always mean more to me than just a signal for repose..
Exceptional (and so incredibly thought-provoking..[obviously! lol]), write, my dear Billy. The poet in you, prods the heart to react .. maybe not always in the way we would expect, but that is what makes your poetry so enjoyable and exciting. Every time. And just why I admire and respect that part of you so much.
Love,
~Roxanne |
