(The Human Condition)
On black boots I walked on a rainbow in a secret valley and
the rarest of flowers sobbed as they were crushed under my
unforgiving heels. This is Paradise, I thought my cynical shadow sniggered, but when I angrily turned it hid behind a tree. In a clearing I met a grumpy camel, it belched and refused to talk to me, but was mollified by soothing words and snuff. What are you doing in
this valley? I thought your lot were desert walkers."' Well, I was employed as a clown by a Swedish circus and every night I had to endure people's laughter of derision. - We camels are never going to win any beauty contest, you know - When the circus came to Lisbon, me and my best mate, the mongrel which could juggle three balls in the air with its nose, escaped. We walked only at night, during the day I pretended to be a boulder and my mate kept watch in case other dogs sniffed us out. We found this place and have lived in peace till now, so please leave you are a human and will destroy this place" " I know what you mean, I'm fed up with people too, let me rebuild the ruin by the stream and we can live happily together." The bactrian looked alarmed, but before it could answer the mongrel came with a rabbit dangling from its mouth. I bent down to pat its head and the bloody cur bit me, enraged I kicked it to death and shot the humpbacked between its eyes. Horror struck by my momentarily madness I went to the valley's lake to wash my sin away, but vale's eye froze to a petrified tear, my shadow joined me and Paradise was lost.
