My silent heart

My silent heart,
Sleeps through the night,
And in the sun,
It takes no delight.
Cold in a chasm,
Bitter and old,
It wants no attention,
No one will it hold.
It lies there so still,
It dares not be seen,
It has seen what can happen,
When others intervene.
Nightmares of torture,
From a past long ago,
But still it haunts,
And torments it so.
For the rest of its life,
It shall remain,
Buried in fear,
Protected from shame.
Far from those,
Who threw at it stones,
And trampled it till,
The blood ceased to flow.
Safe it will be,
This silent heart of mine,
Arms folded,
Jacket closed,
Far from sight,
Far from mind.
