Old Oak Tree

Old Oak Tree
~
In the back yard,
Is an old oak tree.
That has seen better years,
It’s losing its leaves.
What used to be steady,
Has become brittle and weak.
No longer a thing of beauty,
In which to speak.
~
In the house beside ours,
Lives old man Jones.
The best little neighbor.
We’ve ever known.
He sits on the porch,
Most of the day.
Staring into space,
Without much to say.
~
Much like the tree,
His better days are gone.
He just buys his time,
From morning to dawn.
Nothing to look forward to,
All his children are grown.
His wife has passed on,
Now he’s all alone.
~
Most sunny evenings,
We’d walk over to his place.
And quickly we’d see,
A smile on his face.
Oh how he loved to see,
The antics of my son.
As we talked about,
The days yet to come.
~
He could talk for hours,
About his ways of the past.
And the good ol’ days
That flew way too fast.
He was like a father to me,
A Pap to my son.
And we all felt good,
When our visiting was done.
~
This morning over coffee,
I was looking out in the yard.
Surveying the damage of the storm,
That came in so hard.
When suddenly I noticed,
That old oak tree.
Was smashed to the ground,
Right in front of me.
~
My heart sunk,
Deep down in my chest.
As that old oak tree,
Was finally laid to rest.
And like old man Jones,
The day finally came.
And I cried out loud,
When the preacher said his name.
~
That has been several years ago,
And a new family has moved in.
Put I still see him sitting there,
Every now and again.
Oh how he touched my life,
In more ways that one.
He taught me so much,
As if I was his son.

I don't know how you always manage to speak directly to me with your poetry Jeff.

This one actually left me in tears as it brought me right back to my memories of an elderly neighbour that was once like a grandfather to me. Would you believe there is also a tree linked to my story? lol

I hope you have a wonderful day Jeff.

Hugs and smiles
Jennifer

I think you are very talented. I am certain I will not be the only person brought to tears by your beautiful poem. You reminded me of my own father, often sitting all alone..and your poem is the kind that inspires you to make a much needed phone call to a parent..thank you for sharing..

Well dude you are phenomenal....
I hope you are still with us and moved on. If not it is the world/'/s loss!
