Mother, father and only son,
a perfect family in a perfect photo
Unaware of the impending
misfortune
A cheery day in the church rectory
We don’t go to church anymore
Could it have saved us?
Poodle perm, fancy dress
mother smiles
contrived as it may be,
the fad diet really worked this time
but it won’t last
Dad adorned in blue and white plaid,
the only suit he seemed to own
it was the perfect suit for the seventies
.. this is 1983
His smile is real
happy or intoxicated or both
I’m just glad he is here
I am standing behind this beaming pair
feigning interest,
lapels too wide and hair too long
steeped in teenage angst, thinking
only of the weekend
Several bright flashes, memories forever
forged on paper under glass
all memories joyous and painful
are trapped in that frame
