On June 16, 1976, 12 year old Hector Pieterson was the first of hundreds of students killed by police in the Soweto student uprising against Bantu education and the seemingly invincible apartheid state.
June 15
Where is my history textbook?
We’re writing a test tomorrow
and I don’t know where else to look!
Maybe it’s Sipho who took it,
we all know he’s the little classroom crook.
But I don’t need the book anyway.
I know everything by heart-
tomorrows test should not be that hard.
I might as well go to bed to be fresh for the next day.
June 16
I’m up, bright and early,
Ready for what the new day hold.
Mama forces me put on my jersey
And say:” Please my boy, its cold”
Mama says she’s jealous
because unlike her, I’m getting an education.
She says one day I’ll be famous-
me being on radio is what she envision.
On my way to school I run into Sipho
and ask him;” Is it you who took my textbook?”
“There’s going to be no classes today” says Sipho
“So you might as well forget about your stupid book”
Its then that I heard the feet stomping,
and when I heard the young voices singing.
“Come on hector, don’t fall behind!” yelled Sipho.
“Today is the day we go marching!”
Not sure of what’s going on,
I start toyi toying along.
At the front of the masses I see Thabang,
He’s the head boy, so this can’t be wrong.
As we toyi toyi the police start to appear,
But my schoolmates march on with no fear.
I see the photographers coming from the rear,
Mama’s dream of me being famous was so near.
Then suddenly I hear screaming.
I see children running.
The smell of teargas fills the air,
And the police start shooting.
It was total chaos around me,
but for some reason I could not run away.
All I remember is Thabang running to me
as everything around me went grey.

You have caught the every essence of the tragedy that took place that day. It has touch my heart with great sadness that this happen in your country. But like most countries we all have had tragedies that have dealt around schools for one reason or another. We must not forget what has happen but try to move on to a better our future. Be good and take care. May God bless you and protect you.

Powerful write and the picture adds to the horror of that day. I am so sorry for such a sad memory of a young mans life cut needlessly short.
