Cup of war

Contributed by somnium on Tuesday, 13th June 2006 @ 03:10:01 PM in AEST
Topic: war

The armies rise
Eleven men each side
And take their weapon

At the sound of the
Horn they charge
No mercy in their eyes

As they each take
Knock after knock
For a nation's glory and honour

Their people sit at
Home waiting for
Word of the outcome

They jump and cheer
As they make
A score against their enemies

And heads hang with sorrow
As a knock is taken
Hope subdued

And in the end
For the victors the spoils
And they are?

Another battle
In this neverending
War for golden cups

Then the war is taken to the stands and bodies are trampled, then taken to the streets where cars are upturned and businesses burned ... in frenzied celebration of winning a tin cup coated gold! Congratulations nationalists!

Great and timely write ...

War is dreadful it causes great pains. To me there are no gains just the remainers of loss of lives taken.

sad to say this is a very apt title for something that should be a global celebration. just watchin the news as i was reading your poem.
Sad the battle can't just stay on the field. Good poem anyway
