Neither born nor bred by common terms
Nor of a home with an affectionate eye.
Without a figure in the model role
Nor a caring family hand to hold.
A breakfast by an ashtray, served with a breath of smoke...
If only a pat on the head to send me off
Would’ve made the dream of normalcy true
Unfinished work in a back sack held
Through the lonely school bound walk in pouring rain
While mother lay, head spinning from the empty bottle, sound asleep,
My mid morning nap on a desk awaiting.
Then my TV’d afternoons;
Watched over by a slew of advertisement and cartoons
Mother’s bed, still in full spin as it was when I left.
Father, out and away till the hours wee
Not seen in the least for weeks on end;
And when around, he lay in slumbers rest.
No bother to bother the sleeping fool
If awake he’d be quick to shun, send me off
Or yell again…or worse, not say a word –
Little me, an intruder in his majestic castle.
Then off to sleep, will I tuck myself in again?
And as nightmares came I trekked alone
Through obstacles of bottles and half filled cups
To the bed where mother lay in daze,
Hoping not to find a strange man again
Maybe I’ll just rest on the floor once more,
Where I woke that very morning.

This was a powerful scribe, wizard! I'm hopin' it's the word smith in you putting substance to such a dysfunctional childhood and not from personal experience. If from personal experience, then I thank my Maker that ya turned out to be what ya are, a wizard scribe o' communication in poetry. Great work, Paul.

I can't find the words to express to you how much this got to me. Brings back alot of sad memories and tears to fill the eyes.
Such pain, sadness and heart break of an unfulfilled childhood. Absolutely breaks my heart. You've seen too many blue days my friend. May these bad memories be washed away and replaced with much happier thoughts and memories.
A fine gifted poet who has such flare with a pen. Wishing you much brighter days ahead always.
big warm heartfelt hugs,

I agree with the others; this is very moving. Too many children grow up like this, all too soon. Well written in its quality of mingled nostalgia (for being a child) and distaste for the lack of quality life. Reminds me also of my muse, who also led a strange and dark childhood. Good work! All the best, J. |

Tell me this is not true. Tell me. Sorry about the messy ink here, tears sort of smeared the page. This sad write, is so magnificently written. It hurts to read, I am sure I am not the only one who cried all the way through. Reading it makes me want to jump through my monitor to sit with you, hold your hand and say you are ok now, you have all of us as your friends. The truth is, there are as I write my comment, so many little people out there who is being brought up in this very same fashion, not understanding anything except a broken heart that will always recall this type of childhood. The title reminds me of my mother, when things were not going well, she would always snicker and say, happy days. I know why you chose it as your title, and it works for the message given. rL sending you as many stars as there is in this whole universe for this most magnificent masterpiece. Even though it breaks my heart, and you did an excellent job in its creation, to show what it is like growing up alone without love of family. |

Wow Paul...this is a bare-all write; obviously very emotional in its honesty. It was a moving piece to read, partly because in some ways it rang true for me too, but more so because I can imagine what it must've been like writing this, and posting it...Well done on both counts Wiz...

Paul~
I don't know what to add that I have not already expressed to you. You know that I relate to this
[maybe a little to much], and I feel your sadness. I know it was posted under 'family', but I
understand all too well, the pain such a remembrance can spark.
You said to me once that writing of the hard times and moments are therapeutic
and can actually aide in making you feel better. I hope this helped tons!!
You are one of the strongest and bravest people I know. Truly. (and you broke the cycle!!) :~)

Oh Dear Paul,
I wish I could give you a hug dear Paul, for hugs help to take away the pain.
I had a similiar childhood, but at the time I didn't know anything else. Likewise for you I'm sure. It takes much courageous to write down the words that hurt so much!
I commend you dear Paul
and hope your life is now smoother and happy atlast!
Warm love
Well written poem

The bitterness and longing laced through with forced independance radiaites from this well written work. |

Wow this is a very powerful piece of work. The sentence structure really caught my eye. These are very deep words you have shared and your story here sounds like a painful one. Thank you for sharing it. It was very touching to read. You did a wonderful job:)

A very sad poem but good sentiments about a life that motivates us to be better parents if we are the left out ones in childhood dreams. I can relate to this in many ways. |

This poem reminds me of the book 'To Kill A Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, and I liked that book very much! Same goes for your poem, a very sad tale, but, most often, it is the sorrow in our heart that finds it's way onto the pages... very nice piece,

So I don't know what I could say to this that would be original, but I just wanted you to know that I read this a couple of days ago and I have not been able to get the images out of my head (maybe they are my own memories?) since. Beautifully written, as is all your work I've read thus far. I'm so grateful to you for writing it. |
