Only the Blowing of the Wind

Contributed by TheSpiritx on Saturday, 8th February 2003 @ 03:20:00 AM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

The gate is pushed open
And onto the lush, green grass we go.
We move forward
Into the land of the dead.

Each gravestone tells a story
Some short, some long.
Each with their own
Unique experiences.

To the left, Derrick Miser,
born in the 1927,
Laid to rest in 1945.
A victim of war.

Llara Frank, only a child,
was death's victim
Before reaching a year of life.
In the hands of God she sits.

We continue on
deeper into the cemetary,
Respectfully striding
Through the lanes.

Only the blowing of the wind
Can be heard
As it rustles the tree leaves,
Adding to the reverent silence.

You can hear the preacher
Saying his prayers for peace,
And the sound of cars
Driving away from the site and the sadness.

I await the setting of the casket.
I remember the one now dead.
I think about the gravestone
And how it can't summarize his life.

My life.

The casket is lowered into the ground,
My final resting point.
With a heavy heart,
I travel home.
