Make a muscle, show me how strong you are
Don't cry my son, big boys don't cry
If you are a sisssy, everyone will laugh at you
"Look at the baby cry"
Long ago our permission was lost
To express our vulnerable side
The feelings of hurt, sadness and fear were deferred
Rather it was anger, sex and fun, which were incurred
So storng, so poised
Used little ploys
So private, so quiet
Facade of inner strength employed
Was raised to be brave
Tenderness rendered null and void
Tough on the outside
Vulnerable on the inside
The goal to be in control
But where with our own pain would we go
No permission to show feelings within
Must pretend to handle everything, trouble begins
How sad when you would ask,
For tenderness, vulnerability and love
Although requests were quite appropriate,
That degree of relationship openness was akin to insubordinate
No wonder how intimidated by our feelings we were
For we interpreted such emotion as flaws in character
Prone to be judgmental towards those whom we saw as weak
For we were programmed, that type of disclosure, not to speak
And so the role of Macho Man
Became the rallying cry for many a man
How many women did we abuse and lose
And in understanding their feelings, we were totally confused

This is so very true, Will... The most touching thing to me...is seeing a man cry... To me, he isn't showing weakness but strength in his character.
Thank you for sharing this..

Oh Wil, this is fabulous! The message is loud and clear in this
unique composition and I quite agree with the sentiments. It is
sad when society dictates how we should feel and when it is
appropriate to express said feelings. Bah! To heck with convention!
For so long women have felt persecuted and oppressed, but what
is it that men go through, I've often wondered, when they want, nay,
need to be open about what they are feeling and thinking and . . .
well . . . just can't for fear of being labeled in the worst way. So
much pressure.
Yes. Incredibly sad what the genders go through to "fit in".
Excellent post!

For the longest time, I've thought true strength came of letting oneself be weak. I am more convinced of that as each day passes.
Ah, but yes... no one tell us that. Men... and many woman, too, I might add (myself included among them)... are often taught to refrain from such necessary things as tears. It's ridiculous really. Ridiculous and just flat out wrong.
The good news is... I think when you find the right person, the one that accepts you unconditionally, you forget all those crazy, twisted lessons that you learned along the way. Some feelings simply cannot be contained and some people... don't expect or want or need them to be. Find them, and you find your true strength. I honestly believe that we can unlearn lessons that never should have been learned in the first place if we have the desire and support to do so. It does, though, take time.
Wishing you well,
~Snem

Very good, very good. Once again you've taken a serious subject and turned it into a well tuned piece of poetry. I love how you do that. It was a fabulous read. How sadly true it can be. Thank you for sharing your, always, wonderful wisdom. Peace my friend, Laura |

Great job here! Love those last two lines especially...You would probably know better than most how very much this can/does affect men/boys. It's a shame that even women are programmed to accept and even want a 'macho man'...at least to a certain degree...This is a refreshing subject for a poem, and even more so cause it's written by a man.
