The stench is acrid
As I slowly descend
The sharp creak of a step
He heard my entrance
The smell so strong
I shouldn't go down
I know this is wrong
Adrenaline now peaking
As I slowly descend
The smell now competing
With my mind
Saying "You should be leaving!"
But I keep going
The smell now so overwhelming
The rotting flesh is unmistakable
I looked down and saw it
I gasp; it is remarkable
Oh I should back away
This damn curiosity won't be tamed
No! I need to stay
The smell is beckoning
I need to know why that scent has arrived
To be so compelling
I reach the bottom step
The rotting flesh remains potently overpowering
I look up from the floor to the ceiling
I am now full of delight
As I reach for the old rotting flesh of books
The bookkeeper winks
For he knows I'm hooked
