We drove through the night, lights passing us by,
Words whispered,
As though we were afraid to break the spell cast in the absence of the sun.
My limbs were heavy and ached, but your voice,
Eased it away, the pain that we all carry within a soul, lessened for knowing you.
I slept, in that front seat at your side,
Wrapped in your coat, though I was not tired, your warmth comforted,
And all the agony of living seemed to be numbed, by the smell of you so close to my skin.
You tapped out the rhythm on the steering wheel,
In time with an old song on the radio,
And then you sang along, quietly, careful not to wake me.
But I was listening, and smiling to myself,
And in the darkness, I thought,
How amazing it was, that all I would ever need in life,
Fitted into that tiny car with me. You.

Your poem brings back good memories for me. I can relate to feeling so comfortable and content with someone else. |
