Of Poets & Dreams

Contributed by Silent-No-More on Saturday, 20th May 2006 @ 12:57:08 PM in AEST
Topic: poets

Any minute now my ship is coming in…
I’ll keep checking the horizon
And I’ll stand on the bow
And feel the waves come crashing…
Come crashing down, down, down on me…

~Opening to Colin Hay’s Waiting For My Real Life to Begin

Perhaps I seem complacent
For my immobility
Standing, fixed, upon the shore
Of inconsistency.
But I can see the horizon
When I'm looking to the sky
And though it never seems quite clear
I know, for certain, why.

The stillness of the water
Is only an illusion
And its surface a conundrum
That leads then to confusion.
For truly, I reside with others
In the deep, dark underneath
Where thoughts forever bubble up
But secrets, always, keep.

There, the echoes are distorted
And sounds intensify
And everything gets tossed about
When ships go sailing by.
And we, the keepers of the deep,
Know this fact all too well
What's resting there upon the shore
Are empty, outer shells.

In truth, we are segmented
For some benefit
With eyes eternally on the sky,
And dreams we can’t admit.
Our feet linger there on the sand,
Our souls drift into the blue
Our hearts, just below the surface,
Are hidden from your view.

Perhaps, from your perspective
It doesn’t make much sense
But this, a poet’s inclination,
Is our one defense
Against a world that does not know
The enormity of dreams
And those that cannot understand
That we're more than we may seem.

On a clear day
I can see, see for a long way
Yeh, on a clear day…
I can see, see a very long way.

~Conclusion of Hay’s song

Subsequently added author's note (upon having a conversation about this): If your read concluded with a thought similar to "So, uh... where exactly does the yelling come in, Snem?"... I wouldn't be terribly surprised. My sort of screaming, my rebel yelling, doesn't usually read as loud as one might expect it would. But, it is there... just below the surface, which is precisely the way I prefer it. *wink* ~Snem

Unfortunately I cannot say I am familiar with Colin Hay’s Waiting For My Real Life to Begin.

Nonetheless, you are always inspiring to read. Beautiful, flowing, lovely, a hint of sadness(?). Whatever I'm trying to say, I only know this, it was very lovely to read.

Thank you.

Sometimes I feel a bit of an outsider as a poet, even among other poets.
This piece makes me feel like I truely do belong to that breed. The images you convey are so comforting and familier... so "below the surface" that tho you portray this as a rebellious piece, I myself somehow find it restorative,...thank you.

Snemmy you are indeed a gifted writer, and I love the way you can express yourself so freely. I see you've been on quite the poetic storm! Good for you, and I can't wait to catch up.

Snem, sometimes they are rebel mumblings and murmurs but speak the same frustration. A lovely interpretation of the dichotomy between dreams and reality, of what we are and what we yearn to be. Really spoke to my heart.

Oh my dear snemmy... forgive me, sweets for waiting so long to comment on this .. this
one piece of magnificent and (perfectly audible) rebel yell(ing). I am so lost in the words
and their meanings .. (though, it is not positive I am seeing, or reading that which
you may have meant.) I began to read this with not so much a clarity of mind, as of the heart.
I got a conception in my head from the titel, (which I absolutely ADORE), but upon reading,
I decidedly decided that this has layered meanings, as so many of your writes
do. But this one in particular .. oh GOD, hun! How I relate to it on a level, (many in fact) that not
many that have come before, (or hence, I daresay) have acheived.

This is an extreme favourite of mine. Oh god, especially and most specifically that first stanza.

*hugs you*
~Breezy
(who finds reading this a much more pleasant way to wile the hour than finishing
up month end duties .. :P) Thank you for that! : )
