Midnight Egret

Contributed by Tanner on Thursday, 6th February 2003 @ 03:00:00 AM in AEST
Topic: NaturePoetry

Beneath a sky so full that stars could spill
the bird wade in the midnight pond.
Shrouded in shadows from beak to quill,
oblivious to life beyond,
it lorded over the reflected moon,
like a hunter, intensely listening
to the movements
swishing and swirling, as if by a spoon,
beneath the surface
inside the womb
of the dark, whispering waters.

His feathered steps;
his august stance
softer than the midnight breeze,
sketched a silent moonlit dance
that cast a spell to seize
all souls, and life around the restless pond
paused for a time - a vital beat - beyond
the brewing rush, that bubbled
beneath the sleepless sky.

Swiftly it speared
the membrane of the quiet, night waters,
posting ripples upon the face of stars
now broken, now weeping from the slaughter.
Torn from the fabric of all that it knows
To the strange abode of a bird’s gnashing jaws,
It found peace in the long, throaty coffin; and primal laws
as old as time itself merged the fish with its mortal feathered, foe.

Nature’s debt now paid, it bade farewell
with a gust from its sprawling wings.
Its frame increased in a feathered swell
claiming flight, at the pace of a king,
and a speed that soon
found it soaring far beyond clouds of regret,
now a fading, flapping silhouette,
nearing the sullen orb of a midnight moon.
