A blade in the ground
Power around
Soil prepared
Seed planted there
Fuel burned up, necessary rounds
Most all his time, duty bound
Costs rising, very perplexed
With these hardships, what comes next
Battle the weeds and bugs
So the crops can compete
And hopefully there will be
Enough for all of us to eat
Crops are grown
Livestock are fed
Without this nourishment
We all would be dead
Every year, dependent upon the weather
Never to be taken for granted
Knowing well his seeds may not get planted
Even if in the ground the seed goes
Whether it will mature, no one knows
An unaviodable risk in this vocation
Such humility and faith the farmer relies upon
A real gamble is his profession
Always subservient to Mother Nature

What Kaitee said is so true.... and this poem also made me think of children ... as teachers we can only feed their minds and nourish their souls....hoping that they would mature into well-rounded and responsible citizens.
Good write, Will...

First off, I have to say - I like Jenni's comment! I love that this made her think of children. : )
With regard to the write itself... I found myself nodding in agreement. They are most certainly a group that deserves our respect. You very effectively portray them here... brave and hardworking and... yeh... subject to the unavoidable, sometimes catastrophic whim of dear Mother Nature. I know one thing... I'm not that brave and do absolutely respect those that are.

Growing up on a farm, and my stepfather was a small farmer, makes me really appreciate this write. My Dad had this bumper sticker on his old blue ford farm truck..."Don't talk about farmers with your mouth full" I love that, and respected my dad for the work he did. Farmers are good hard working folks. Thanks for sharing this write. Peace, Laura |

I'm very proud to have been born a farmers daughter. My dad was born with a green thumb as he raised 8 kids. As long as I can remember he never lost his crop 'cept maybe a late freeze killed the fruit.
I thank god for this once farm where I still live.
My father passed ten years ago but he still walks these hills.
Very beatifull, wise write.
luv, huggs, smiles,
emy |
