In this holy day and age
We tell to each other not stories but riddles
Not riddles but the sweet incense of the pipe
Flowering from the weed of our iniquities
From this desire
Inspire
our greatest joy, our deepest sorrow
For we live not for today but tomorrow
And tomorrow's giving does not give to take
or rather not to love but break
The solitude of our inhaled breath
It is the song of the wax-winged sparrow
And I call within from ivory pillared halls
towering, glowering
For I do not belong
In a place of such glamorous invincibility
To clutch, nails digging
Serenity
And to you this is nothing more than a hall
I must implore
That you please not stay out later past ten
This balcony, overveiws a cultivated garden of many hues
but my favorite of all must be the crimson of the fallen snow
The chill that brushes every bone
The cloak wrapped around me will not heal
that which Time has determined to kill
For we all love the chirping of the once-loved harp
the solemn bow of the violin weaving a pattern before my very eyes
The piano writing down my lines
This is the Holy Masquerade
Where demons dress as angels they say
and the angels do not come down from heaven
Because we are all a form of flattery, mockery
to imitate them, to bend to them
Dance within fire and ice
and drink from the tainted spice of life
Blood red lips dipping low, tongue drawing patterns
Across your porcelain skin
The night will go on and I will stand here
perched on high
Waiting till the night draws nigh
Flutter away with the exhale of the sound of the wind
Encompassed by the snowflakes
And you won't see me anymore
nor the palaces that you adore
Or the silent garden here below
the thrashing of silk upon snow
A dance, a dance
O let us all dance
Will you come and grace me with some formality?
But I see here now an angel endowed with a crown of ice
Beckons me with gray, dull eyes
Because he is the true reality
as is the sweet sweet temptation of your lips
Drawing me further and further away from him
And he calls me back with stone cold wings
To breech the walls of my smoldering prison
O sing to the Holy Masquerade!
This is the truth
The truth of it all
that all humans are liable to fall
To crawl
back to where they first began and scratch, hearts bleeding, ears screaming
God, God, take me back
The sound of the silence is suffocating me
I'd rather just stop my heart's beating
To be held if only one time
From the grasp of the demon's gentle touch
his sweet breathe
his caressing tongue
The words I've known all along to be false
And I cannot break away from them
O God, God
End this Holy Masquerade
So that there will be no need for me to fade
And this messenger
Your silent witness
Grant me his protection
His voice to denounce all others aside
And walk beside
Both You and he
Though he be made of stone and You are all
Enthroned
Upon stones most precious and he's just mined from a dried up river
But God I'd rather have him than anyone else
To overtake this Holy Masquerade
O mighty Fortress
O mighty Fortress
The Holy Masquerade continues on
and I am left with this simple song
That the piano graced by writing down for me
And You are there but a arm's length away
Perhaps again another night
you will dance with me
out of spite
Snickering though he does not know me
Leave me be, I have not found
All that there is around
A sound of a child's laughter
To which you cannot hope to understand
or comprehende
And to me it is a song of hope and joy
And I'm going now to leave behind
The true Holy Masqerade
