Bushfires Downunder

Contributed by kangarose on Wednesday, 5th February 2003 @ 11:20:00 PM in AEST
Topic: Event

It all started with a lightening strike,
A small ignition to mother earth,
That fire started slightly over night,
Then she blew up with gusts of winds and began to roar.

Small towns as we once new them,
The people in them all happy and going about life,
Now they were congregating together to make an important decission,
To stay and fight to keep there homes,
Or to leave and possibly return to nothing,
As the report said in the papers,
By a fire fighter, You are not a hero if you stay,
You are not a wimp if you leave,
The most important thing of all is,
That no one loses ther life.
It was thier own decission thier own choice they had to make,

There was young Jack,
He rode into a blaze on his four wheeler,
Why did he do that you ask,
He rode in to save his dad,
HIs dad came out unscathed,
Young Jack has burns to his right eye and down his face,
They say it will take two months till he is okay,
He wasn't a hero he just wanted to save his dad.

Then there was young Tom and all his mates,
Battling a blaze around his house,
Two neibhours either side,
Lost there house and everything in it,
What was John going to tell his wife,
When she returned from over seas,
Their house was gone he saved their,
Two cats and thier dogs a few photos but,
everything else had gone up in flames.

These are only a few of the stories I have heard,
And yet today the battle to put those fires out completely,
Is still going on, The last fire is still burning,
We are still constantly battling the smoke,
It drifts down from the hills every night,
We need rain so badly,
Asthmatics every where are suffering,
I just hope the fire fighters,
Return safely to the ones they love,
No more cattle and sheep are lost,
No more homes are burnt to the ground,
And that once they are out,
No more fires burn around here.

This poem really shows the danger and also the pain of loss ... well written. My heart is with all those who have lost loved ones and property too.

Kangarose. We only get the horrendous pictures (when they are a bit short of the usual politics, crime and celebriries.) So it's a shock when you begin to see the whole story.
But it seems to happen every year. Are there no big schemes planned e.g. Mile wide fire lanes, emergency water supplies like we had in the UK during WW II. Silly ideas I suppose when you have never been to Oz

Good write. It's a shame to see all the people having to make it through. I admire the courage.
