Eternal Rites

Contributed by Man_On_High on Friday, 12th May 2006 @ 09:04:43 PM in AEST
Topic: DreamsandWishes

Shall the day ever break when life
finds us merely husband and wife,
with passion not so much denied
as neatly folded and put aside..
and the old joyous insistence
reduced to some quiet coexistence?

Shall we one morning, awake in bed
with not a carnal thought in our head,
look on each other without surprise
out of widely awake and uncandid eyes;
to touch and know no immediate urge
where all of our mysteries once would converge?

Speaking for the sake of something to say
and now and then put on a display
of elaborate mimicry of the past to prove
that ritual reigns, where passion once ruled
and calmly observe the bleakest of rites
that once made splendor of all our nights?

Dear, when we stop being outrageous
and no longer find so firmly contagious
the innumerable ecstasies we would find
in the stroke of a hand or leap of a mind,
not now or then love, need we fear.. thus,
those two sad people will never be us.

B

Wow . .. that is all I can muster here. Damn, Billy, your
economy with words and incredible talent for displaying
them in such a meaningful and profound way never
EVER ceases to stagger me. Unimaginable genius in here.

That last line . .. perfection.

god . .. I love this completely!

Beautiful work as always Bill with a birds eye view of obvious revealations into the discontented heart and soul of love.

I really liked this poem. When you care about or love another person, and make a concerted effort, passion rather than boredom can be the norm. A positive ending to a sad commentary on love made this poem very poignant.
