When you were born, I promised you,
That you would never have to see,
The sad and nasty side of life,
How wrong could I have been,
You were bullied at school,
In nearly all of your classes,
And children called you four eyes,
Just because you wore glasses,
They even scorned you about your hair,
It was a beautiful red delight,
And you begged and pleaded to me,
Dye it brown for me tonight,
You also witnessed suffering,
When your dad became very sick,
You tended to him every day,
And you coped so well with it,
Then you found a part time job,
And your happiness was abundant,
But less than two years later,
They made you redundant,
So the happiness I promised you,
Was never on the cards,
Instead you drew the short straw,
And sometimes life was very hard,
But it never made you bitter,
Your mature and very strong,
And even though life is hard,
Your never down for very long,
For you have a special gift,
Your resourceful and so kind,
And I hope in the future,
Lots of happiness you find

A real heart churning post - so many issues with my own son resonates with this. With him it was always self esteem, not enough friends, and now living alone and losing his job - at 18! I don't know if there are words for the feelings beneath the skin of this poem. Maybe parental anguish, guilt, love and hopefulness will have to do.

Sue, I like the bitter sweet quality of this poem. Despite the cruelty and sadness, she thrives. I can so well relate to the parents desire to always protect their children from the ugliness of this world, but children are resilliant and tougher than we think. It sounds like your daughter has turned out to be quite a young lady. Great write!

Very touching. I'll echo Butch's comments as well. There is sadness here... oh, but there is reason for joy as well! Your daughter sounds like a lovely person.
One technical note... I believe a few of the "your"s in the last couple stanzas should actually be "you're"s. : )
