Back in the Bottle Again

selfstruggles
|
A drinker, a smoker, a gambler
A fool to have thought he had changed
A moment of normal existence
Too much for the daft and deranged
The sobering sharpness of boredom
Has cut his resolve dead in two
He always ends up
Down at the bottom
Back in the bottle with you
A futile attempt at redemption
He tried to be good but he failed
Too weak to fight off the temptations
When life's bitter trials assailed
So useless to live in denial
Though that was the best he could do
He always ends up
Down at the bottom
Back in the bottle with you
So lets raise a glass, you're his God
You demon of bourbon and lust
We'll offer a toast to stagnation
Deceit and betrayal of trust
Come see as his world falls to pieces
It's all just a question of when
And watch him end up
Down at the bottom
Back in the bottle...
Again

Hi Larry, hope all is well with you. Remember.. you have not failed until you give up...and I know you won't.
I never did like Jack...I prefer Xavier...
Take care, Larry...

I'd like to think that by knowing failure and temptation first, the resurfacing of one's self at the end of the struggle will be so much sweeter. And I'd also like to think that whatever you are going through, you'll pull yourself together in the end.

There are things I call a whoops in life, not a failure. We all have our demons and our addictions, habits. I know the man that you are, I know that you wont give up and fall to the bottom of the pit. Your my friend now and always and Im here nomatter what. If you need a hand to help you up, mine is extended. You have never let me fall to far and by damn I wont let you either.
A beautiful poem, deeply moving and honest.
I love ya larry!!

The note of grief in this perfectly delivered piece is very real. I think many of us feel it at times, in varying degrees and with more or less accuracy... but it's familiar to me at least.
Hang in there, man. There're fires of inspiration and spirit in unlikely places, and maybe we'll be given the chance to right wrongs eventually.

Of all the vices, I hate the smoking the worst.. it smells and it can kill you... as for the others; well it's not for me to stand in judgment. I sometimes wonder at how the deepest agony inspires the most wonderful poetry and I marvel that you can have the courage to put your heart out there to be read..oh and I'm glad you're writing...oh and you might obey that concience......it was given to us for a reason. snap out of it... |

your talent is only surpassed by your pain...and I feel ya-
I'm battling some demons myself right now and can only offer up advice which says:
take it not, day by day but hour by hour..
second by second if you must-
Good Luck Larry~

Whoh! A different kind of post for you Larry, and so raw, despondent, so bitter and self recriminating - I like that! Pearls grow around those things that irritate.

Perfectly and passionately penned, Larry. My word, yes. You have set this moment so solidly on the page... it is (as all poetry is, I believe) a moment... trapped there in between a sting of yesterdays and a whole slew of tomorrows just waiting to happen. You have done both the moment and the poet justice here... unabashedly revealing them with incredibly artistry. It's cathartic, I think, when you really nail it like this... and it serves a purpose beyond what may be immediately obvious. Ah yes, to be fallible is to be human... and to reflect on what we see as our failures is too, of course. I haven't any doubt that you'll arrive at a tomorrow that brings with it a new perspective of this piece.
I'd argue only the second line. There is no fool here... it is, perhaps, only that change takes time and can be incredibly difficult that would make it seem so. We all, I think, feel the fool at times... but honestly, I think those moments are what allow for growth.
You, my friend, did remarkably well here. I'm terribly impressed.
Thinking of you,
~Snemmy

You hit sadness in the gut with this one. Booze and loneliness are such good friends. As always you tell a powerful tale.

Spending a night with Jack,is a double- edged sword. He may well free the mind to write but he always requires paying for the service.
Relate?..You bet I do.
I thought your poem was excellent,
