I logged on to 'your-poetry.com'
To read the poem `Amorphous Chromosome'
And I was surprised to see my obituary
Which stated that I had died in 2004
The year that I was born
I quickly logged off
`Horrible horrible internet!' I cried
I turned on the TV
It was the national news
They suddenly started showing
Clips of a woman;
Dr. Margaret Mayfair,
An attractive Professor
Who had been chief advisor
To the Minister for Science
According to the newscaster
She had been killed
While testing a new drug
That was supposed to
Tame wild mushrooms
From attacking our cities cerebellum
The broadcast was suddenly interrupted
A group of giant mushrooms filled the screen
They chanted in unison
In an eerie whine
`red, orange, blue, green'
`red, orange, blue, green'
I turned off the set
I was upset
The woman was my mother
All at once the phone rang
I picked up the reciever
A voice spoke
`Charles, listen to me…'
It was my voice
`You, we are in great danger.
You need to listen carefully.
The blue capped mushrooms
Are tapping this phone.
I must be quick…
Aeeeiiieeee!'
I heard a muffled murmur
`red, orange, blue, green'
`red, orange, blue, green'
The line went dead
I scratched my beard
I dialled
A number only I knew
Which had come to me in a dream
Where mushrooms had operated
On my brain
Implanting these eight glowing digits
The phone rang at the other end
And was answered
`Hello?'
I hung up
Because I had heard
The chilling voice of a mushroom
Hastily I gathered up my few possessions
And bolted for the apartment door
I got the key in the slot
And scurried down the hallway
The hall seemed to be longer than before
Then I heard a hissing sound
I looked down
My possessions were melting
My laptop, my mobile, my pager
All dissolving into hot slime
I finally got to the end of the hallway
Dived thru the door
And then I felt a shiver of horror
I was back in my flat
And the walls were weeping blood
The TV switched itself on
A terrible wailing sound
Emanated from the set
And the screen filled
With the shape of a giant mushroom
Then the TV started to expand
It was as big as a desk,
And still growing
I was cornered
The screen began flashing
And the wailing increased in volume
There was a suction coming from the screen
From the image of the mushroom
The set now filled
All of one wall
Things around me started to get sucked
Into the screen;
a coffee cup, a lampshade
A remote control
All disappeared into the sucking fungus vortex
My control was remote
I looked around for weapons
An eggwhisk, a walkman…
Nothing
Now the TV filled half the room
And it's power was pulling me in
I grabbed the plug from the wall
And yanked it out
The room shook
The windows burst inwards
And the TV continued growing
The mushroom began chanting horribly
`red, orange, blue, green'
`red, orange, blue, green'
With my last bit of strength,
I clambered onto the windowsill
I noticed outside was a policeman
I cried to him for help
He elongated his neck up to the fifth floor
And said `You have been bad!'
The TV mushroom
Roared, rocking with mocking laughter
Well, there was nothing else for it
I jumped
Grabbing the policeman's neck
And sliding down safely to the ground
Or so I thought
The ground was changing
Beneath my feet
I started to run
And as I was trying to flee
The ground became quicksand
I began to sink
Though I tried to continue running
I was rooted to the sprout
And slowly sinking in the morph
My grandibles, nice as they are,
Were gently fondulating,
Riding wurps in a wurmhole
I snarted atoms into cramp atomically
`Gurp!' the pingle ton mushroom one
I snarted again
Birth fumplings birkin beggar
`Nar har har! Life begins afresh in squarbles…
Enjoy your life, it may be your last!'
The chimbly said
I looked at the chimbly snarting away
Crushing gusts of birkin rushed
Thru my soul
White lightbones hit my sight
Pouring thru my shattered self
A diamond was in me like a guiding light
I pushed
I wriggled
The light got brighter
I pushed again thru pain
A purple haze enveloped me
I felt warm hands reaching for me
Suddenly I was pulled out into the light
And lifted up
I let out a great gasp for air
Below me I saw my mother
The doctor cut the umbilical cord then
And placed me on my mother's breast
`Congratulations Mrs. Mayfair!
He's a fine strong lad'
Said the doctor
`In fact, I've never seen
A healthier looking baby'
I closed my eyes and slept
Dreaming of my coming death
And the end of `Amorphous Chromosome'
