her eyes

in triumphant hollows
reminders echo love's song
so sweet and tender
were the words
sung by innocent voices
when we were young
what color are my eyes
you do no know the answer
your false love betrayed
something falls to the ground
my heart stunned
by such lack of detail
my fingers flee the night
drying tears in the dark
something cuts my soul
mortally wounded
love has no place to hide
as sunrise parts the sky
reason settles the argument
no war or battle fought
for this romeo and juliet
graceful lines on my face
a cautious smile for the world
he sees me in decades past
my heart ground to dust
I powder my face
with equal parts of sin and prayer
while he denies knowing me at all
holding me above the crowd
they cannot see my tears
