Shuttle Columbia,
You were the oldest orbiter in the Shuttle fleet,
this did not mean death your crew had to bravely meet,
how can something so right beautiful go so wrong?
Shuttle we mourn you even though your families ask us to be strong,
serious problems 23 minutes before your scheduled touch down,
whilst approaching Cape Canaveral, we know not yet why or how,
you broke apart while exposed to peaking temps of 3,000 degrees,
30,000 thermal tiles didn't protect you from that extreme heat of re-entry,
we look at mysteries surrounding your final moments upon your last day,
whilst wife of your shuttle commander speaks on behalf of families today,
for while traveling at 12,500 mph, or 18 times the speed of sound,
Shuttle you disintegrated minutes later, never touching ground,
in surrounding regions of the pine forests Nacogdoches,
kids and other residents are finding chunks of your debris,
Shuttle Columbia you've flown into an unknown atmosphere,
America grieves with your astronaut families left behind and dear.
"Nature always finds the Achilles' heel,"
a former official's views today on reel.
..all from a piece of debris dislodged days ago during the launch..
"although we grieve deeply, as do the families of Apollo I and Challenger before us, the bold exploration of space must go on." ~Evelyn Husband, the wife of shuttle commander Rick Husband, speaking on behalf of all the astronauts families earlier today~
