He struggled in vain; he always fell
Such determination didn’t seem possible; I’ve never seen him give up
Ever since the accident he’s tried so hard; he shouldn't push himself so far
He’s been in the hospital for so long; he keeps trying
I don’t understand; they told us he was getting better
How can this be; there must be some mistake
His clear blue eyes were so dark; it made me want to cry
Seeing someone you love so helpless; so childlike and simple
I can’t believe he gave up; his hope was all I had left to lean on
His lungs and heart were so tired; he couldn't breathe on his own anymore
His eyes never opened anymore; eternally he slept
Just once I'd like for him to wake; I never even got to say goodbye

This one is difficult to comment on for me. I was T-boned in 1988 by an idiot who ran a stop sign. I had burst fractures of my neck and spine. The ER Doctor told my parents I would probably not survive. I did, but it was a long hard road. What is so haunting about this poem is that while I was in ICU, I heard and saw a number of auto accident victims rolled past my bed and I could hear when they were put on the ventilator. I could also hear the prayers of their families and the worst part, I could hear the aftermath of when they didn't make it. This poem reflects the fear, hope and heartache I experienced at going through this terrible event. It is very touching and well written. The frustration at the struggle and loss of your friend was well conveyed here. Just remember, Jacob is now in a much better place than you and I and there is no more heartache or pain.
