It occurs to me now
That all that remains unseen,
Unheard, unfelt, unknown to us
Does not do so for its elusiveness -
But for the lost opportunity
Of unwillingness and inability.
The images that exist in darkness,
The songs that fly by on wings of silence,
The weight of transparent, paper thin
Contact lenses sitting, not floating, on corneas
Are never nonexistent,
But are often… overlooked.
The fleeting colors of so called reality,
The crash and bang of everyday,
And the heaviness of the clothes we wear
To cover up our own nakedness
Steal our attention –
And close our eyes and ears and hearts
To the everything-else we dare not know.
We are, it seems
Nearly always, half asleep
In our wakefulness.
Until - unless - we stumble into
That pool of forgotten clarity
And drown ourselves there
(in a half inch of rain water, even)
Until the lungs of numbness fill
And foolishness dies
So that we may, finally – open, wide,
Long neglected ears and hearts and eyes
And, by virtue of overwhelming awareness
Become unwilling and unable to deny
How we were truly meant
To live our lives.

Oh Snem! I have had far too few of those drowning moments in my life for many months now. Thank you for reminding me of who I really, truly am, deep within my heart of hearts.
A wonder write....describing so well what is so hard to describe!

This is a first for me! I already listened to your audio blog of this...this wonderful poem. So, I see you posted it, so I decided to read along and listen to it again. That is quite an experience. It is even more thought provoking, at least to me, hearing it again and seeing it...reading it...listening.
Gosh, I hope I am not being weird but it was like being to a live poetry reading by Snemmy!!!!
Anywho, no matter which, I feel like this is a true masterpiece.
You are a true artist, Snem.
Thank you.
Tim

An enormous write my friend. Your magnificence is shining well in this piece, and while you may think this should have been written before "Of Poets and Fire" (which is one of my favorites of yours) I think that being linear sometimes can be boring. The better poets on this site are not linear.
This is a good companion (though separate in many ways) to the work "Of Poets and Fire".
A splendid all around job lanterned with true emotion, captured with your amazing original style, and laced with an ensemble of beautifully arranged words. Magnificent job Snemmy!
We are, it seems
Nearly always, half asleep
In our wakefulness.
A tremendous line worthy of being often quoted!
BRILLIANT AS ALWAYS!

each stanza, stands beautifully alone..
amazing, lucid awareness - there is much more beauty to be had in truth, then in butterflies or the blooming of buttercups..as it were - lol
this validates that..(and might shame as well, those who find its relevance almost too much to bare)
