Dear Mom and Dad,
His innocent eyes just seemed to stare back at me
As if I had done something wrong
Well, I did.
And I have.
The red trickled down from his chest to his arm to the ground
His eyes staring back as if to say,
“You did this.”
I’ll be home for Christmas this year, I swear.
Dear Mom and Dad,
The captain says we take another neighborhood today
If only the men in suits behind desks
Got to be here and breathe our air
Breathing sand clears your mind
It sure cleared mine
But this is my second year here
And this sand is suffocating me
I’ll be home for Christmas this year, I swear.
Dear Mom and Dad,
Tell Rachel I got the picture she sent me
I wake up to her beautiful face every day now.
But these days turn to weeks
And these weeks turn to months
And I can only hope
I’m still the one that she wants…
I never got to tell her I love her.
I’ll be home for Christmas this year, I swear.
Dear Mom and Dad,
I got the papers back today.
They say another six months sounds good for them.
I’ll be home for Christmas next year, I swear.
