A dog’s faint bark
The blackness of night
Enshrouding, cascading
Down to suffocate the light
Its dark tendrils
Searching, reaching
For a soul to engulf in shadow
A dog’s faint growl
The black appendages spread
Not seeing, not knowing, not caring
Yet intent on subduing
The tiniest trace of moonshine
Attempting to play across a glistening eye
A dog’s faint whimper
The wind falls still
The air close and stale
As the vice tightens
Drawing in, crushing
Stifling all in empty abyss
