Sixteen Minutes From Home.

SIXTEEN MINUTES FROM HOME…(©Peter Sprenkeler)

Like anyone…I have always admired courage,
Of all man's varied qualities…one globally respected.
Gifted and talented individuals of rare stock and fibre,
Their lives laid on the line…fear among then never detected.

Brave and stoic…they are all acutely aware of the risk,
And yet they dare…discoveries to find anew.
A rare and priceless breed of human being,
In any sphere of action…they always number few.

But sadly it is a fact…sometimes they do not return,
They on occasion…will pay the ultimate price.
Yet this will never deter this hardy band,
Never to be wavered…by negative advice.

And so it was today…when seven of these people died,
A tragedy for mankind…and indeed for science.
They knew the risks…and yet they relished the chance,
Thumbing their noses at danger…with resolute defiance.

Yet others will rise to fill their large shoes,
The spirits of these heroes…will never be alone.
They ventured for man…they lost their lives in the challenge,
Sadly…they were only sixteen minutes from home.

Written to commemorate the lives of the seven astronauts killed today…only minutes from home and safety…mankind will miss you.
