I don't have a cell phone,
I don't have an Ipod,
I don't have Converse or Etnies,
I don't have a Louis Vuitton or Gucci bag,
I don't have make up or hair products,
I don't have a boyfriend,
I don't have a digital camera,
I don't have chains or diamonds,
I don't ride in a fancy car,
I don't live in a wealthy house,
I don't have more than three dollars in my pocket,
I don't even have an outfit for everyday for the week.
But,
I have a Dad that plays catch with me in the yard and enjoys it as much as I do.
I have a Mom that sends me fruit cups and a pealed orange for lunch.
I have a Dad that will play Monopoly with me on a rainy day.
I have memories, that will last forever, of a Grandma
that would call me from the hospital bed to make sure I was going to wear a coat to school.
I have a Dad that will drive me to three 7-11's so I can find the flavor I want.
I have a little cousin that would give up Barney to spen the day with me.
I have a Dad that I can sing old tunes with for hours while watching the Red Wings game.
I may not be rich, I may not have the look and I may not have to accessories.
But I have what money can't buy.
I have the love of a family.

Usually I would say that this is too contemporary for my taste. Seriously, I have said that of many poems on this site. I usually do not find contemporary wording to be poetic unless it is laced with igniting passion. Here, I feel this. I feel the meaning, the energy and it reminds me of Langston Hughes, who in his day used contemporary language and wrote about subjects much like this. WELL DONE!
Enjoyable!

::faint smile:: and some people dont have either. the anaphora in this, in my opinion, would only work if it was being spoken and with a lot of gusto. great ending, bit of a cliche poem but i think you made it orignal enough for our times. afterall a poem that was written 10 years ago about this subject didnt have all of the elements you incorporated. |
