Suburban Stroll
walking in the suburbs with the old lady
she says if you look down you might find spare change
she found
one time
two quarters and a dime
walking the streets with my girlfriend’s grandma
middle class suburbia can be so pretty
we got
so lost
lost in the neighborhood, lost in thought
walking with an old, old lady
middling coolish Christmas day
she pulled
her sweater
closer to her chilly jewels
we didn’t find a bounty
finally found our way to the house
girlfriend and the family sit in front of the TV
asked where had we been and said they worried
strange they hadn’t come to search, to see
about me
about thee
walking with an elderly girl
who told me many things
her history
her present
her unrealized dreams
Grandma always wanted a cat
their glassy knick knack figures
abound in her pristine little house
family said it was impractical
and she had to agree
made me sad, for her a cat could not be
I got to walk with a regal old lady
who bent to look at ornamental potted plants
I treasure and remember our few separate hours
me in my jeans Grandma in her high waisted pants
I hope there is lost money
in heaven for you, Grandma
lying on the streets of gold
and cats
real cats
not ceramic and not cold

This is really sweet. :) Very beautiful poem. The sensory language really got to me and I could see it really vividly. It's very real and I like this a lot. |
