Before winter breaks,
mornings cold and harsh,
icicles dipping, snowfall slipping,
a child in bed,
a stove waiting.
whispers aside,
each day, he takes stride
to battle the frost, melt away
cold floors, frozen doors,
blazon is the hearth,
red, yellow, orange,
in this grows two,
wisp is the smoke,
waving goodbye,
crisp is the dear,
staying, far away.
warmth given
to us, the unforgiving--
seasons melt, into years
streams diverged, not by tears,
an empty bed,
a stove barren,
no one to listen,
he takes his time,
battling old age, pilled upon him,
wrinkled fingers, dirt lingers
he moved the hearth, now
white, gray and blue,
there’s nothing left
missing is the coal,
cold and alone,
empty is the heart,
wounded, unglued,
warmth taken
from us, the unforgiven.
