The call for prayer, the golden mosque glowing in the sunrise
hubbly bubbly pipes, apple smoke circling smiling faces ,
mingling with the smell of sea air
battered mercedes from the sixties, beeping horns!
The flamboyant Casino, Gold, Marble and
"only platinum credit cards please",overshadows the bombed school
whispered arabic gossipers over coffee in tiny cups,
diamonds glinting in shops with doors open and no security,
painted posters of murdered politicians,
burning frankincense Myrrh and flowers scattered,
unoccupied syrian checkpoints still hold an aura of fear........
The beaches like the south of france
turquoise sea and "ten dollars a sunbed"
whilst exquisite women hide hijabs in bags and don lipstick and heels!
Faces pulled tight with the surgeon's knife
ignore the man who begs with legs blown off in the war.
Tiny children with dirty faces selling chiclets gum
stare and tap on windows of maseratis and range rovers,
in awe of the beautiful little girl with gold in her ears and on her fingers
swaying hips beckoning hands,earthy drum beats, champagne, mini skirts and...
dark beirut eyes...
