#50

This land cries
For all the world like gulls
On a storm-wind.
I set sail for unknown shores.

With the weight
Of a thousand rocks on my chest,
I sing the praises of stone.
The surf resounds
In the crannies of my breastbone,
Throbbing with the danger
Of setting out.

I ignore the landing-places
And fair beaches.
I pass all of them on.
My life is a coracle, after all,
Death a certain shore.

These are the waters
Of the destined few,
The sea-roads of the warriors.
I値l roam farther
Than ever.
I値l see new coastlines shrinking,
Feel the slap of different waves.

I値l come close to the land
To call out to it,
And hear the way my cries echo back.
I will pit my wandering
Against the immovability
Of coastal islands.

And I値l see home,
At last.
And you値l be there for me.
Trodden-upon,
Forgotten, granite.
To cast yourself away again
For me.

And I値l clamber out
And bless the land.

And turn and anchor myself
To your goodness.

When I first saw this, I was all like 'yay, he posted' and I was going to say so in my comment, but after reading, I couldn't say it anymore.

I've been staring at this since yesterday, trying to figure out how to comment, and not being quite sure how.

The images are wonderful, and the whole poem makes me long for the sea. I can picture this, being a stormy day, where the clouds are gray, and the waves are hammering at the rocks.

(Hey, that was kinda cool, yay me :P )

Seriously. You know I love this, Andrew. I love all your writing. I feel that this one is special, though. It's got a lot of you in it. Or how I can see you, anyway.

Great write, and as Johnny said, true poetry.

Good write, my friend.
*hugs*

Beautiful... I found this very refreshing. Your
talent is evident in every write that you allow
us to read. I loved the loneliness and
seeming hopelessness at the beginning of
this and then the abrupt switch to positivity.
The last two lines really stick out to me.
Kudos on another killer write.

Andrew, you make me proud to be living on the near Pacific coast, sorta close, and yet rather too far away from a true poet. I have yet so find any fualt in your words, their images or the places they take me. The journey, THIS journey ... has been worth taking and will be ... again and again many times over. Pleased am I, to have been able to read this.

A brilliant write all together. I was captured by the power and the beauty here in your words. I shall be looking into your past work as well as looking forward to new songs from you soul.

Good job!

Andrew,
From your comments, forums and poems, I have always thought of you as a wanderer, warrier, adventurer, yet somehow in all your roaming you still give the impression of being deeply rooted.
This piece says it so much better then I can. You have most definately given us all a true glimpse into your soul,
and for that thank you, for it is truely a wonderous place!

I know I do joke a lot about me being a Roman and you a Celtic Warrior. It is just a feeling that I have. For I am a man full of passion but trapped within the bounds of discipline and circumstance, always controlled. Marching to war in quiet straight lines to die silently in service, without complaint and wiles. While I somehow feel that you are like your ancestors, a warrior who runs to war wildly, screaming your defiance. Individuals who fights savagely but with honour and passion. But never before that I see your soul so clearly as in this poem that you have submitted herein. I see a warrior on a journey full of hardships and pain and yet one who is deeply rooted or achored to his ancestral roots, the land-earth of his soul-birth. Acair indeed. This is your soul, your anchor. I don't really know the motivations behind this write nor indeed your actual circumstance but if at all I have ever known of you in YPDC then this is a true picture perhaps of Fionndruinne the man. A warrior-ranger who roams the land, enjoying its beauty and yet doing all he can to safeguard nature and keeping the peace for all to find. Oh well just a picture I get from reading this. Opinions of course, such as it is. Anyway a good write despite your "attempting" label for perhaps by letting the words write themselves rather then planning them out you bared your true soul.

Oh! how on earth did I miss this??!!!

It is without hesitation that I say this is my favorite of your posts on this site. The others that come here before me saw, perhaps, what I feel I did as I read this. Your soul, Andrew, exists on this page, I believe. And we, your readers, are blessed in so many ways (some that we may not even fully appreciate as yet) to bear witness to it.

After my initial read, I was moved to read this aloud. I encourage anyone and everyone to do the same. I knew already that it was special, that it was profound... but in speaking the words aloud, I was moved in a way that I cannot truly describe. This is brilliant and powerful and I am so very, very glad that I did not miss it entirely.

Andrew? Even "With the weight/Of a thousand rocks" upon your chest (or perhaps because of them) - you are soaring here.

The subject matter and the writting style reminds me of the olden saxon poets or gaelic (considering the title name). One poem comes to mind and that is "the wanderer". It gives me that kind of feel. A person out in sea, which has become almost his life, passing through his mind of despair, but I really like the ending of yours of hope, and how the whole anchor thing ties in to making it a fabulous ending. Good job.
