A Jazz Recording

The piano is lost in the 5/4 time,
Looking cautiously for a companion.
He finds one in an arrangement of brass keys and mellow tone.
Smooth, steady,
Desmond carefully allows the alto’s voice to diffuse through the studio
Like smoke from the cigarette wedged in the head of Wright’s bass.
Filling the soul.
Morello eases in to deliver his strong drum beat,
Lifting the rhythm off its feet
To a new elevation.
The argument steadies.
Brubeck’s vamp pulls the jungle back onto the earth;
Letting it go
Back into the flow.
Still keeping it real.
The session ends,
And the cats can’t hide their grins of approval.
A last smoke wraps up the gathering.
The room empties slowly,
Leaving behind the stench of perspiration and redemption.
The studio stays open to live another note.
