Christmas of 1953
Sandra S. Corona
When I last saw Daddy
he was ill, shrouded in white.
He said to be a good girl . . .
to learn to ride my bike.
All I want for Christmas
is Daddy to come home.
I was five when Daddy left
but now I'm six, half-grown.
I rode, still he left us
and I didn't understand.
What was this thing--cancer--
that hurts a full grown man?
All I want for Christmas
is Daddy to come home.
I was five when Daddy left
but now I'm six, half-grown.
Daddy was laid to sleep;
Mom would not let me go.
Where did they hide my Daddy?
Will someone let me know?
All I want for Christmas
is Daddy to come home.
I was five when Daddy left
but now I'm six, half-grown.
In my dreams Daddy's home--
in his arms ev'rything's swell.
So if you see my Daddy
send him home for a spell.
All I want for Christmas
is Daddy to come home.
I was five when Daddy left
but now I'm six, half-grown.
God, please take his cancer
it's the only gift I need.
You know how much I love him . . .
bring him home . . . or please take me.

Gosh, this brings tears. I was only 6 when my adored GrandFather died and I did not understand. I was not allowed to go to the funeral and no one took the time to explain to me what happened. I was so distraught because 'Poppy' was my world. This is a wonderful write. Thank you for sharing.

Oh my...This is very sad. It's terrible how children are left to figure things out for themselves sometimes. People need to realize that children can sense things very well, and that they have a right to know, too.
I like this poem. I found it slightly too repetetive, but generally, it worked really well, and it definitley pulled my heart strings
Great write,
*hugs*
