The letterbox rattled
As it fluttered through my door
I knew just what it was
Before it settled on the floor
Knees trembling with fear
I stooped down to collect
The postmark screaming at me
With a mind blinding effect
Then sitting to my desk
Sipped some coffee from its cup
Gripped hold of my little knife
And slowly opened the nightmare up
Releasing all the pages
From their neatly folded nest
At the top centre of the first
Her Majesty's glaring crest
I just knew this would happen
The same words as before
Why won't we live and learn
Please how many times more
To do the tour of duty
To serve this blessed land
To place our fragile lives
In a strangers sweaty hands
When will it all be finished
When will these battles end
Our abuse of Mother Nature
Requires much time to mend
As I say my last goodbyes
I whisper "please don't be sad"
My ashes will gently rest
In the sands around Baghdad
In my final peaceful sleep
All worries will be no more
About that paper kiss of death
Bluntly scything through my door.

Dean,
This poem is very well written and sad. But the message is very clear. I also believe that as a whole there has been wat too many wars on this planet. We have destroyed way too much of the earth, as well as human lives.I personally don't understand why we even have wars. Although it is sad and has brought tears too my eyes it is a great poem.

Unaekserver, Excelent poem, went through it myself, Served 1843-48 then was on the reserve for four years till '52. I used to dread the post every morning.
What I liked most was you accepted so well the challenge to write what I call "proper poetry" that scans and fhymes and therefore has impact and Is memorable. If you read a few of mine I try to do the same
You took me right back for a moment to that dreadfull time. |
