She understood now what it was –
That lightning strike of insane lucidity,
The howl accompanying the bearing of teeth
Crimson stained and razor sharp,
Poised to pull flesh from the bone.

She had been hunting

Circling first in excited anticipation
With senses heightened, she lingered.
Her eyes narrowing with darkness, watching
The shadows recede as the moon
Lifted itself further into the sky.

She waited for the distant cry

Of a wounded animal letting out
Its irrepressible song, its pain,
Knowing, it would reveal itself with its scream.
The predator within her awakening then,
As impulse drove her into the night

Raging with indescribable delight.

The moon alone bore witness
As she lunged at her unsuspecting prey
It had smiled, even, when she exulted
Howling, to announce her conquest.
It, too, knew exactly what it was -


This… her hunger, fed.
