She understood now what it was –
That lightning strike of insane lucidity,
The howl accompanying the bearing of teeth
Crimson stained and razor sharp,
Poised to pull flesh from the bone.
~ ~ ~
She had been hunting
Circling first in excited anticipation
With senses heightened, she lingered.
Her eyes narrowing with darkness, watching
The shadows recede as the moon
Lifted itself further into the sky.
She waited for the distant cry
Of a wounded animal letting out
Its irrepressible song, its pain,
Knowing, it would reveal itself with its scream.
The predator within her awakening then,
As impulse drove her into the night
Raging with indescribable delight.
~ ~ ~
The moon alone bore witness
As she lunged at her unsuspecting prey
It had smiled, even, when she exulted
Howling, to announce her conquest.
It, too, knew exactly what it was -
This… her hunger, fed.
Author's Note: (I know, I know... "another author's note, Snem?" Well, uh... YEH!) I cannot post this without pausing to more directly pay tribute to those that know, inately and intimately, of hunger and of screaming. These creatures inspire me and with all that I am, I wish to thank them. ~Snemmy

Marvelous! Oceanic waves of Brilliance displayed here. This work is oozing with pure poetic glory and deserves to be hailed. I recall a few weeks ago wondering when you would post again. As, "Of Poets and Fire" sat at the top of your listings for what seemed a very long time. Maybe it was not as long, but it felt that way because your words are missed even in the smallest time frame.
This my friend, makes the wait well worth the anxiety. I was blown over. You have always been a masterful poet in my eyes, but this takes the cake. Just simply remarkable, memorable, and truly captivating.
BRILLIANTLY PENNED!

To devour fear,step into it
and understand it.It is often irrational
and can be left as bones, with a dose
of courage and empathy?
Excellently written,as always,

There seems to be a primal basic huntiing instinct inherent here. The imageiry was very effective. I can picture myself being t here enjoying the beauty of it. Reminds me of eagles feeding on the Rainy River in International Falls,MN.
Well done, Snemmy

I shivered involuntarily at the end line.
Something about the impulse, I guess.

You are a poet. Everyone who submits to this site is actually so I will say that you are a poet who studies her craft. Brava! Having joined this site yesterday, I have posted but little. As I read many of the other writers hereon, I was astounded. Not necessaily in a good way. I will not attempt to compare them to you as you really are a poet. I appreciate that you took a fascinating image and really wrote it so a reader could see. I was caught up in the acitivity of the poem. Its cadence worked very well and your rhythm scheme led me seductively to a satisfying conclusion. Do continue to write, you do it very well. Hautebush |

This is an excellent sequel to 'And I AM.' Equally intense and exquisite in form and use of images. Your talent and insight are deeply inspiring!
