anguished

I had a dream one day.
In this vision I saw my lost love,
Who had died only three seasons past.
We were drawn together, by unseen bonds stuck fast.
She stood before me, quiet, resolute - and difficult to see.
Those soul-mirroring eyes, reflection empty,
Shining, instead, the absolute cold of death.
Absolute eyes framed by ethereal form unformed.
I felt so heavy then, body bent
From the very weight of my torment.
Demons, dragging my soul
Deep, deep down,
But, my soul, being of the living,
While stricken by sadness and evils, and demon-borne,
Could not pass that barrier into Hell, just yet,
Though the torture I felt - an equivalent threat.
Silent, we stared,
I, hesitant to speak,
Hunting for phrase as one for a deer,
Yearning to find escape from fear.
As though lightning from cloud to cloud,
Two minds suddenly open to each other,
Intentions baring...
Shared thoughts of daring.
Images flooded my mind,
Her, the wedding, years, sadness, depression.
Her retreat into herself overwhelming,
Delirium prevailing.
And then myself
Above her, a cast aside husk,
Host to parasitic dementia.
And her demise... at my hands.
This wrought apparition before me,
This scornful imposition,
Audacious to share presence after
Mortal actions found mortal ending.
Before me this distorted simulacrum,
This appaling, viscious doppelganger,
Whose eyes in mine don't stare,
But, into my soul's deepest corner, glare,
Judging me for passed time -
Inability to help, my crime.
I, left without option, merely stood by.
In her end, anguish crushed my soul.
"You foul temptress from beyond!
Evil specter from times gone!
Do not seek vengeance for your death!
Bear no anger toward your savior!
I could do no more righteous for you!"
An oppressive silence set between us,
Face to face upon this cold plane,
My thoughts laid bare for all Heaven
And Hell to see.
Her approach - slowly, a crawl,
A cat upon its helpless prey,
This once so honored woman,
Now degradated perversion,
Closer, until upon me,
Fetid stench invading my senses,
And appearance suddenly so clear:
Repulsive counterfeit of my love so dear.
The floor rose to meet me,
And I, falling,
Forced down by the anguish of loss
And the desecration of the lost,
Dreamed even further.
A familiar scene,
Reversed though it was,
Became animated:
She atop my prone body,
Hands to my throat,
Flash, spots both bright and dark
Sought my sight smote.
I struggled against this grip,
Reinforced by the steely strength of death,
And looked up to see my lost love.
As I to her: my end. I fought for every breath.
A face twisted with rage.
A sibilant hiss,
"This is my vengeance for your mercy -
For your tainted benevolence, this fee."
"Die..."
(Air! Please!)
My mind and my vocal chords screaming...
Gushing obscenities...
And pleading.
"Die..."
(Air!)
My life ever since,
A contemptible existence.
"Die."
(Air...)
Mercy!

i like this poem because of the climactic ending. as i read the beginning, you drew me in and by the time i was near the end, i was on the edge of my seat. I also love the ending. its simple, and yet it draws the entire poem together and reveals its meaning. I enjoyed it. |
