A July Reprise
Come to the old window, sweet one:
Press your face near to the pane;
Prop your elbows on the worn sill
Of the past and gaze out upon
That which will be: you will see
Me pushing up the path, slow
And steady, trudging through the dust
And the rusty shafts of evening sun.
I'll come and look in on you,
Carrying my heavy pack, pretending
I only came by in accidental passing....
(I know what will really happen, though.
We'll make eyes at one another,
Smile as though into a mirror,
And then, perhaps, you'll let me in.)
