My Brother.

MY BROTHER…(©Peter Sprenkeler)

I remember clearly that day my brother came home,
He stood at the airport subdued, gaunt and alone.
It was Vietnam from which he had fled and flown,
Wasn’t the same person that I had once known.

Spoke very little as I drove him away,
Avoiding conversation is all he had to say.
I felt his heart was a minefield of dismay,
His body was home but his emotions were still away.

I knew him not this stranger beside me,
The coldness of his heart I could feel inside me.
His eyes were cold had no joy or glee,
Seemed lifeless…no love or sympathy.

I watched him closely for he was a brand new soul,
Totally differing from my brother of old.
I wondered of the tale he could have told,
He never spoke to me of his deeds so bold.

Seems he had left behind his soul in Vietnam,
Don’t know if he cared or even gave a damn.
The person that came back was just a hollow sham,
The body stands in Australia…the soul buried in a distant land.

He lived his life…he lived it well,
Did a reasonable job…the best that I could tell.
But I always sensed his soul in battle it had fell,
He had come back…but his spirit had gone to hell.
