A Daddy’s Girl
~~~~~
At a phone booth in Chicago
A daddy’s girl calls home
To express what she misses
And how she feels so all alone
She went off to college
But a month ago
Her first time from home
O’ how the time moved slow
~~
At a church in Colorado
A daddy’s girl gets wed
A gown of pure white
And a vale on her head
A tear streams down
On her lovely face
To match her fathers
As they lovingly embrace
~~
At school in Alabama
A daddy’s girl says bye
As she hops out of the car
Her daddy starts to cry
Her first day of school
A grown-up little gal
He’ll have to let go
Yet he doesn’t know how
~~
At a bus-stop in Toledo
A daddy’s girl lets go
Of the life and the things
That she used to know
She set out to find her dreams
In New York or Hollywood
She tries to fight her fears
If only that she could
~~
At home in West Virginia
A daddy’s girl is a sleep
Lost in a dream
That seems to be so deep
Thirteen and growing
Her life is about to start
As he looks upon her face
He feels a tugging at his heart
~~
Time doesn’t stop
The world keeps spinning round
To freeze the hands of time
A procedure was never found
Little girls grow up
Time keeps marching on
Blink your eyes twice
Today will be gone
This is a great poem look at daddy's girls everywhere! It's funny--kind of--I just entered a poem entitled "Daddy, Daddy" and then noticed yours on a Daddy's Girl!
Great writing, Jeff!!
Gosh Jeff, our children grow much too fast and leave home and it is so hard to let go. Seems only yesterday my grown sons were 3 and 5 and are now 33 and 35. I still dream of them as little ones and God has blessed me with grandsons just like them, but they just don't live with me so it is very different. We just have to love and nuture and hope for the best when they go off to be adults.
Lovely work,
Rita |
