Living with Nelly.
Nelly works for the local council, before leaving
in the morning turns the heating off: "Waste not,
want not" is her favourite saying. I work from
home and that's a bit cold, when waiting for
the postman and the sound of letters dropping
onto the mat in the hall, A long day especially if
it rains and I can't find where Nelly has hidden
the booze. "How many lines have you written?
today?" She asks, turning on the gas fire. "Only
Four lines! What do you do all day?" Pours
herself a drink, from the bottle I couldn't find
and the aroma of whisky tickles my nose and
dries my throat. She sees my glazed look and
tartly tells to go make myself a cup of tea.
“Remember that you're an alcoholic,” she
says, using her office voice. As the flat warms
up I feel inspired to work a bit more. "Why
don't you work from nine to five, as I do,” she
says. “Come sit her beside me and let’s watch
the news.” She takes another sip of her whisky &
soda and the clinking sound of ice is a melody of
longings, that fills me with images of wine and roses.
