He opens the door with that
Strong, sturdy hand.
That hand easily grips
The basketball he carries through the air and slams
Right through the painted metal rim
In the overly lit gymnasium.
A hero in that long, smooth, silk, white jersey.
His spotless, sheer white Nike
Takes the first step into the night,
Leaving behind a small imprint
Of the number fifteen on the dirty tiled floor.
His left leg,
Covered by slightly worn
Cerulean denim (extra large), follows his right.
Those legs carry his firm torso
Into the chilly February night.
Those legs he leaps off of
To catch the fly ball soaring down
The left foul line
To lead his team to victory.
He’s fully consumed
By the black of the night.
The frigid wind
Blows right through
His field of short, healthy, dark hair.
He squints
His intense, chestnut eyes
As the blast stings his
Naturally dawn-tinted cheeks
Through a thin strip of soft whiskers.
He squints his vigor, energetic eyes
At the opponent through his mask,
Mouth guard placed behind his
Thin, serious, appealing lips.
He bends, arms out,
Perfect for me to fall into
He bends, arms out,
Ready to tackle.
His ears, neon pink.
But only his face effected
By the mid-winter chill.
His solid upper body covered in
His varsity apparel.
His strength contained
By the soft, but heavy leather.
A knight in a navy blue Michigan jacket.
Just glancing at this true, real man
Brings feeling back into my numb fingers.
Staring him down,
All six feet and then some,
Causes warmth to flow back through my lifeless legs.
He begins to speak.
His deep, genuine voice
Melts the ice.
Lights the fire
Of everlasting passion
In my heart.
This All Star,
This MVP,
This player of the game,
This champion.
This knight in a varsity jacket,
This hero in a silky jersey.
My All Star,
My champion,
My knight,
My hero.
My everything.
