Six people sit near him
at the Golden Griddle.
It is eight in the morning
and he orders a burger.
He hates people who do this.
He used to be a cook.
Two people leave,
the whispering grows louder.
Why does he insist on listening,
he cannot make out their words,
nor does he want to.
He once was a psychiatrist.
One man enter,
about thirty-five,
and buys a paper.
He is twenty-five
and reads only the comics now.
He once cared.
Two new people arrive,
they are black.
He looks away
then returns their glances.
He did not always notice colour.
He has been taught
many things,
innocence invaded,
experience purged.
The great war
to rid the purities.
He once was a child.
