Almost Great

A rocking horse stands
alone in a corner;
a crib yet dusted
still bears the scent of lost youth.
Hearts hang heavy, veiled,
not orbs of blue,
nor the romantic notion of the lunar neo;
silent, cast in a haze -
three moons witnessed
behind a translucent, suffocating
cloth of autumn mist.
Disappointment is auditory:
tea cups shattering,
crashing to the floor,
shards striking the china dolls splintering faces;
mechanical eyes never quite closing,
watching the solitary moment,
solace descending,
witnessing the innocence lost
in the passing seed,
and the living child.
A mother
and another,
who is grand,
was almost great,
share a tear
of quiet desperation.
