THE NIGHT BEFORE THE SUICIDE
A Gothic Horror Story
by Robert Davidson
I have killed myself
and today I attend my own funeral -
But last night I went down to the morgue
and there identified your body
Electric light gives a certain grace to the dead!
those awful slabs - unknown corpses laid out side by side
rigid forms cold on marble slabs
Water distends a corpse unpleasantly
parchment skin bloats a drowned girl
Your smile frozen, mocking - your stiff set lips -
and then comes a moment in which
I have gone through more than I lived in years
Speechless with emotion, I cried
life is very cruel and love the cruelest cut of all
If I could not have you, why then -
I gripped your dress and your flesh with it
and made you face the darkening river.
You didn't think I'd do it!
What should I do with my love for you?
hate it, fear it, because it is too much for me?
Such cruel stabs of pain love gives -
I stood on the very knife-edge of life.
In all things human there is a shedding of tears
as we struggle with each other for love
And now in a dream scream
I burst my skin open, letting the blood run
I open my throat with a knife.
As a ghost I stand by
as they lower my coffin into the ground -
In all the searchings of my heart
I have never felt more wounded, more broken, more alone
Your last words to me as keen as blade-thrusts -
Now knowing my soul would never rest
I knew my defeat was complete.

something you won't be late for, can't say you won't attend.. to your own funeral no matter how glorious or simple it may be. this is icy cold, this poem.. one thing for sure, God promised us He would give us new bodies.. once we are with Him.
Your poem is very graphic.. taking a look at what it will be like before the funeral.. most of us pray, if we must go, God will take us in the most painless way, it is us who can sometimes be cruel to our own bodies..
Well, for me, I pray each night and day I have life, until He calls me.. I have a hard time thinking about some people are trying desperately to hang on to their special lives, while others are out there trying to end theirs.. one can only ask themselves, how special is their life, and what can they do to help another person out.. its great to take care of your own health and all that, but being so ... selfish and constantly thinking you are the center of the universe is just that.. selfishness.. we must all come out of our shells, accept our lives and help others out .. which will be what God wants us to do.. love others, and at the same time, helping ourselves out..

I can't say I am a fan of gothic or graphic poetry or stories, but I have read your work before and found it quite good. This is well done in a tasteful sort of gorey way. I do have to say that in a strange it was informative and might make others think about how final death is. That suicide only leaves you would to wander aimlessly and anguished forever. Great write, here.

Robert I have always read your work and thoroughly enjoyed each one of them, but I have to say u threw me with this one.
A cold, eerie and spine chilling feeling I got when I read this write by u. You always have a different style of writing and that's what makes you such a remarkable writer. One is always drawn into reading ur poetry from start to finish. A real thought provoking write.
Never am I disappointed after visiting ur pages my dear friend. Keep up the great work.
*warm hugs*
