Far From Thee

The pain
Of missing my homeland-
Would make my heart race
To my lover across the sea's foaming crests:
But no kinder to me is Fate
Who would separate us to her malediction:
But my heart will always be true
True to her only; and no other
Will I have, forever more.
Still, every new morning will carry
The hope of reunion, reborn:
And I will wait, day by day
'Til I return, welcomed by your arms
As I step off the quays into the city.
As the storm abates
I see thy face again, though
Thou art far from me, on dry land-
Leagues across the roaring sea.
