A Natives Life(Village in Alaska)

Contributed by packatack on Tuesday, 14th February 2006 @ 10:13:54 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

Back on the North Slope in Alaska
Life alot different here than outside of Alaska
All natives live in harsh world of trying to survive
Makes you wonder why they hunt animals to take away their lives
No other means of food and water
Store bought food don't taste good like native's source
Teachers, and people of other ethnic backgrounds
Don't understand a life of a village native
They say this and that and without thinking first
Thats why us natives don't really like anyone else
You can't accept a life that we live
So I ask you to try and live up here in this land
Switch places with you I may not like it too
But I'll tell you this we surely can survive there too
Don't forget that we love our families like you do
So watch out what you do to others around you
Inupiaq means a real person to us
If you live like a gentleman or sweet kind of lady
Thats means you are also an Inupiaq too
Natives all over the world know how to survive
So why do you try to invade our traditions and life
We love our culture and will adapt to technology
Thats why we like to learn about history
Getting a job is like no other here
Got to have a piece of paper to fulfill our hunting desires
We know we know how it works around
So shut your mouth before we put you in the ground
Village life is not the same like others live
Hope you understand how natives think and live

A very moving poem. I sympathize with you; it makes me think a lot about my own life. Thank you for sharing.

Please consider some of my poetry as well, if you have time. Thank you.

It begins with love and respect... sometimes even with knowledge of others and places, people still bend low to selfish acts.. for their own benefits.. greed.. this poem shows the tenderness about culture.. I am learning truths about Indian culture myself.. its a real eye opener. So many myths about people and places..jealousy has twisted a lot of minds. A lot of books written out there, where there are people reclaiming their names and taking away the myths.
